More than 6 keys ?
« on: May 16, 2016, 06:05:38 AM »
Hi,
I'm a french social worker, and I'm very interested in Makey-Makey.
But I wish to know if there is a way to have more than 6 keys.
My project is to fully adapt a gamepad (which have 10 buttons and 2 directionnal sticks), for disabled people.

Thank you for your help.

Sam

Hey Sam,

Oh wow!  Sounds like you're doing some really good work.

The Makey Makey has 6 keys on the front, and 12 more on the back, for a total of 18 keys you can send to a computer.

You can change what key commands are sent to your computer by going to http://makeymakey.com/remap/ (note that if you use an AZERTY keyboard layout, you'll have to change over to QWERTY for when you conduct the remap.  Once it's done you can change it back to AZERTY).

Good luck with your project!
Let us know how it goes,

Liam

HI,

ok 18keys is just what I need I think:
- 10 buttons
- 2 sticks = 8 buttons

so 18 buttons !

Do you know if someone already did that ?

Hey Sam,

Oh sure - yeah there are lots of ways to make joysticks with Makey Makey.
Here's a video with a bunch of different examples https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2ZdecyByh8

Did you figure something out?

OK, thank you for the answer, but my question was about how to make a joystick which can have the sensitivity of a modern joystick.
In modern videogames, we can have a big range of directions, between "up" and "right", for example. And not only "up" , "right" and "up"+"right".

I wonder if there's a way to do that with makey makey. It seems to be difficult...

Hey Sam,

Oh sure - well that's all done on the software end.
Makey Makey has 18 keys it can output.  You just have to set up your joystick to send different keystrokes in different directions, then on the software end you use those keystrokes to move different angles.  Maybe 'W' is straight forward 0º.  Maybe 'J' is 10º to the right, 'H' is 10º degrees to the left.

Here's a scratch program that kind of illustrates what I mean. https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/143415297/

If this is for a pre-existing game, you might be able to change the controls in the game's settings.

Hope this helps!

Good luck,
